SEMHIT delivers evidence-based mental health programmes to Tanzania's elderly population — building resilient communities and improving millions of lives with compassion and rigour.
SEMHIT — Support of Elderly Mental Health in Tanzania — was established in response to a glaring gap in public health: Tanzania's rapidly ageing population had virtually no access to structured mental health support.
Founded by researchers, clinicians, and community advocates, SEMHIT began as a local initiative in Dar es Salaam before expanding its evidence-based programmes across 18 regions. Our work is grounded in deep community trust, rigorous research, and a commitment to culturally sensitive care.
Today, we are Tanzania's leading NGO dedicated to the mental wellbeing of elders — advocating at policy level, delivering frontline support, and training community health workers to carry our mission forward.
We deploy four interconnected programmes that address the mental, social, and systemic barriers facing Tanzania's elderly population.
Mobile and fixed-point clinics staffed by trained mental health professionals, providing assessments, counselling, and referrals to elderly citizens across urban and rural Tanzania.
Equipping family members and community health workers with the skills to identify early signs of mental decline, provide first-line support, and reduce stigma around elderly mental health.
Structured peer-group programmes that combat isolation and loneliness — the primary risk factor for elderly mental deterioration — through regular, facilitated community gatherings.
Publishing peer-reviewed research, advising government bodies, and advocating for a national elderly mental health policy framework that protects Tanzania's most vulnerable citizens.
Our work is grounded in peer-reviewed science. Below are selected publications and findings that drive our programme design and policy influence.
A SEMHIT-led study of 2,400 elderly participants across 6 regions found that 41% showed clinical signs of depression — yet fewer than 3% had ever accessed mental health services.
This policy brief outlines a scalable CHW model tested in Tanzania with a 74% reduction in untreated depression after 12 months of structured programme delivery.
Analysis of SEMHIT's Social Integration Circles shows a 68% improvement in reported loneliness scores and a measurable reduction in anxiety symptoms over a 6-month intervention period.
Every dollar we raise goes directly into frontline programmes supporting Tanzania's most vulnerable elderly. Transparent. Accountable. Effective.
